Story submitted by the grant applicant:

ā€œMy partner and I found Aurora abandoned beside a busy road in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa. She was severely emaciated, suffering from mange, and terrified. Frightened and confused, she was being shooed away by passersby and narrowly avoided being hit by passing cars several times. Thankfully, despite everything she had been through, she was incredibly friendly and so desperate for food that rescuing her before it was too late wasn't difficult. She wanted help, and I'm so grateful I happened to be there for her. We took her home and did our best to feed her. Thankfully, Only Paws had provided me with kitten food, which helped me nurse her out of the lethargic state she was in. Even so, I knew she needed far more care than we could immediately provide. She was tiny, weak, and spent most of her time sleeping. Over the next few days, we made every effort to find her a home with someone we believed would be better equipped to care for her than we were. Unfortunately, every attempt failed, as no one was willing to make the commitment. While we waited and hoped someone would adopt her, I slowly fell in love with her. We named her Aurora, Rory for short, because she slept so peacefully, almost as if she were dreaming her way toward a better life. In the end, I decided to become the person she needed. We took her for regular veterinary care, treated her mange, and watched her grow stronger with each passing week. Today, Aurora is a healthy, bubbly, hyperactive kitten who, oddly enough, loves tummy rubs, cuddles (mainly on my chest or anywhere on me that's available), her stuffed lizard, and pretending to attack whenever she's scolded. She'll dramatically come at you with her little claws and teeth, but never actually hurts you. She's all attitude and absolutely no follow-through. And despite trying practically every food cats supposedly like—from human food to cat treats and all the usual favorites—Aurora remains stubbornly loyal to one thing: kibble. Apparently, after everything she's been through, she has decided that kibble is the height of culinary excellence.ā€
